Art and Craft

Portraits of art forgers are currently very popular. However, few of them have managed to provide deeper insight into the motives for copying. Mark Landis is considered one of the most productive art forgers in American history. His impressive oeuvre was produced over a thirty-year period and covers a broad palette of painting styles and periods, including important painters of the fifteenth century, Picasso, and even Walt Disney. Even though these copies were sold on the free market for considerable sums, Landis was not interested in money. Posing as a philanthropic donor, over the years Landis gave hundreds of works to countless institutions in the United States. Art and Craft begin like a game of cat and mouse in the art world on questions of authorship and authenticity, but it evolves into the history of an obsession.
