DOKU.ARTS 2013/2014 at Zeughauskino
DOKU.ARTS 2013/2014 was set up as a two-year research programme entitled Second Hand Cinema – Perspectives for Artistic Documentaries and took place from September 10 – October 12, 2014.
On the occasion of the second part of DOKU.ARTS 2013/2014 we were particularly pleased to welcome a large number of international guests – filmmakers as well as international experts who were part of our symposium Recycled Cinema. The symposium was opened with a keynote by renowned film historian Thomas Elsaesser.
DOKU.ARTS screens documentaries on the arts and on artists from all over the world and across all genres, such as architecture, visual art, music, literature, theatre, dance, cinema, and photography.
Further to these documentaries on art, each year DOKU.ARTS dedicates a selection of films to a specific topic and/or region.
Focus: Second Hand Cinema
As a time-based medium, the documentary is predestined to be a genre that captures and reconstructs artistic achievement. In 2013-2014, the showcase focused on compilation films and new documentaries about art and artists dealing with archival material. In recent years, artists and filmmakers from the Mediterranean region have dealt with archives, found footage, and the internet in their artistic work.
“Recycled Cinema” Symposium
In addition to a showcase featuring international documentary films on art, a symposium was held on September 11 and 12, discussing the practice of archive usage and aesthetic strategies of 'second hand cinema' and mash-ups and comparing them on a pan-European level.
In the 21st century, an extraordinarily lively scene of creative approaches to archival film material has sprung up on the Internet. At the same time, archival restrictions and licensing practices have been substantially tightened. For example, the price of using archival material from German public broadcaster ARD/ZDF exceeds the cost of producing the material itself, and for most independent producers not working for television entities, the rates have become prohibitive. Non-commercial institutions are also having great difficulties presenting culturally valuable film series on the basis of materials from these archives. In Germany, the visual heritage therein is being underused. Why do barely any films here rely predominantly on archival material?
An international selection of filmmakers, archivists, scholars and legal experts addressed issues such as the accessibility and sustainability of our audiovisual memory and prospective aspects of copyright in film.
Further information can be found in the section Symposium. The symposium was held at the Zeughauskino in the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin.
